Hôtel Château Voltaire

Paris, France

The short version

The house stands in the first arrondissement, a few streets from the Tuileries, and was put together from adjoining buildings on rue Saint-Roch. Rooms are small for the quarter and finished in dark timber, stone and heavy fabric. The ground floor carries the public parts: a bar, a restaurant and a sitting room laid out like a private apartment.

What the rooms sit in

The buildings are old and narrow, so the plan shifts from floor to floor and no two rooms are alike. Circulation is tight and the lift is small. The quarter around it is commercial rather than residential, quiet at night and busy by day, with the market street of rue Saint-Honoré running alongside.

Worth an email

Room sizes vary widely here, so ask what floor and what outlook a given rate covers before booking. If stairs are difficult, ask about the lift and its size. The restaurant and the bar keep their own hours, separate from reception, and those are worth confirming ahead.

Palácio Príncipe Real

Lisbon, Portugal

The short version

The house occupies a palace of the nineteenth century in the Príncipe Real quarter of Lisbon, restored and reopened as a hotel. Rooms are spread through the original floors, and ceilings, plasterwork and tiling were kept where they had survived. A garden with a pool lies behind the building, below the level of the street.

What the rooms sit in

The building sits on a slope, so the entrance floor is not the lowest one and the garden is reached by going down through the house. Shared rooms include a sitting room, a dining room and a conservatory that opens on to the terrace. The quarter is residential, with the botanical garden and a viewpoint over the city within a walk.

Worth an email

Rooms differ in height, outlook and access to the garden, so ask what a rate actually covers. Ask whether the pool is open in the season you have chosen. If any restoration work is under way in the parts of the house you would use, the hotel will say so when asked.

The Aubrey

Santiago, Chile

The short version

The hotel joins neighbouring houses in the Bellavista quarter of Santiago, at the foot of the hill park that rises behind the street, and it keeps the domestic scale of its neighbours. Rooms open off corridors that were once private ones, and the joins between the buildings can still be read. A pool and a terrace sit in the space behind.

What the rooms sit in

Because the address grew out of separate houses, levels shift by a few steps in places and the plan is not regular. Shared rooms are a bar, a dining room and the garden terrace between the wings. The hill park is across the street, and the Bellavista blocks around it are quiet by day and busy after dark.

Worth an email

Ask which of the houses a room is in, since the two sides are not alike in size or in noise. Confirm whether the terrace and the pool are open in your season. If a late arrival is likely, tell the hotel, as the street entrance is small and easy to miss.

La Valise

Mexico City, Mexico

The short version

La Valise keeps a small house in Colonia Roma with only a handful of rooms, in a building from early in the last century. Each room was fitted separately rather than to a single plan, and the house reads as a residence rather than as a hotel. The operator runs other addresses outside the capital; this entry is about the Roma house alone.

What the rooms sit in

The house is residential in scale, on a tree-lined street among the Roma blocks, and there is no lobby in the usual sense. Guests are met rather than checked in at a counter, and breakfast is arranged rather than served in a dining room. Restaurants, bookshops and the two Roma parks are within a few streets.

Worth an email

With so few rooms, availability is the first thing to settle, and the rooms are not interchangeable. Ask which one a rate refers to and what it opens on to. Ask also how a late arrival is handled, since the house is not staffed in the way a larger hotel would be.

Hotel Boca Chica

Acapulco, Mexico

The short version

The house was built into the rocks at Caleta in the middle of the last century and reopened after a long restoration. Rooms are plain and white, set in terraces that step down towards the water. A pool sits on the lowest level, with the sheltered bay and the small island offshore in front of it. The scale is small throughout.

What the rooms sit in

The building is low and stepped rather than tall, so most rooms are reached from outdoor walkways and stairs. Shared parts are the pool terrace, a restaurant and a bar, all of them facing the water. Caleta beach and the older part of the city are close, while the newer hotel strip lies further around the bay.

Worth an email

Confirm directly that the house is open for your dates, as this coast has had storm damage in recent years and repair work has followed it. Ask which rooms face the water. If stairs are difficult, ask how the stepped levels are reached before you book anything.

Hotel Escondido

Puerto Escondido, Mexico

The short version

The address is a line of separate cabins on a sand beach along the coast from the town of Puerto Escondido, run by an operator with several other Mexican houses. Each cabin stands on its own with a terrace, and the shared parts are kept to a restaurant, a bar and a beach club rather than a lobby and corridors.

What the rooms sit in

There is no single building here: the plan is a row of low structures behind the dune, linked by sand paths and planting. The sea in front is open, and the current along this coast is strong. The town, its market and the fishing beach are a drive away rather than a walk, and the road is unlit at night.

Worth an email

Ask which cabin a rate covers, since they are not the same and the distance to the water differs. Ask about sea conditions in your season, as swimming is not always possible. Transfers from the airport are arranged in advance rather than found on arrival.
